The columns for this issue of NAEA News were written prior to the 2022 National Convention. As such, you may find information about Convention sessions and references to past occurrences in the future tense.


The 2022 NAEA Convention in NYC is almost here… Check out what the Secondary Division has to offer!

Secondary National Showcase: Thursday, 3/3/22, 9:00 am
Come meet this year’s National Secondary Art Teacher of the Year. See what makes their classroom exceptional and gain insights into their best projects, best practices, and exemplary curriculum. See how to truly teach secondary with a Q and A at the end to wrap it up. The presenter will introduce the National Art Teacher of the Year, and the award winner will share about their school: demographics, location, setup, and much more. The presentation will then move into what they do: best practices, best projects, curriculum, extracurricular activities, and what made them the National Art Teacher of the Year. The presenter will thank the award winner and end with a Q and A. Participants will leave with information that can help them improve their school program, improving arts education as a whole. I hope everyone can make this one-of-a-kind presentation!

Secondary Smash Up for Newbies: Friday, 3/4/22, 9 am
New to the Secondary Division? No problem, we got you covered! Come to meet and hear from four secondary leaders about AP, NAHS, community outreach, or art tech. Get a beginner look at what you need in your first few years to be a well-rounded, successful secondary art teacher now.

Sponsor an Art Honor Society Today: Friday, 3/4/22, 6 pm
Come meet this year’s NAHS Sponsor of the Year. Get the “Top 5 To-Dos” for a successful chapter and an inside look at projects, fund-raisers, community events, and much more from an extraordinary NAHS sponsor and organization. The presenter will introduce the NAHS Sponsor of the Year and the award winner will share about their school: demographics, location, setup, etc. Then they will share their “Top 5 To-Dos” for a successful chapter with projects, fund-raisers, and community events that made them NAHS Sponsor of the Year. Presenter will thank the award winner and end with a Q and A. Participants will leave with information that will help them start a new chapter of NAHS or make improvements in the chapter they already have.

Conversations With Colleagues: Saturday, 3/5/22, 8 am (In-Person Only)
Come and meet the NAEA Secondary Division Leadership Team and other like-minded colleagues from across the country in this meeting of the minds. Get emails, numbers, ideas, and a renewed sense of purpose in your classroom. Breakout groups on specific topics important for postpandemic teaching. Door Prizes!

Secondary Regional Showcase: Saturday, 3/5/22, 9 am
Come meet this year’s Regional Secondary Art Teachers of the Year, four of the best art educators our country has to offer, one from each region of the United States. See what makes their classroom exceptional and gain insights into their best practices, projects, lessons, apps, tools, and much more. See how educators from different parts of the United States tackle everything secondary. The presenter will introduce the Regional Art Teachers of the Year and the flow of the session. Participants will break into four groups and each award winner will present their best practices for about 10 minutes simultaneously. After the first block of time, everyone will rotate and the next 10-minute block starts. Blocks 3 and 4 will finish up this information-packed session. Participants will leave with information that can help them improve their school program, improving arts education as a whole. I hope everyone comes to see how NAEA awards winners do their thing!
