Leadership Opportunities

NAEA is led BY members FOR members. This is YOUR national, professional association! Since NAEA’s inception thousands of members have contributed to and benefited from being involved at the state, regional, and national levels of the association.

Open Calls for Volunteer Leadership

We offer member-exclusive opportunities for volunteer leadership that can help you gain experience, make great connections, and gain national recognition—all while shaping the association and the field of visual arts, design, and media arts education.

Annual Call
March – May

The NAEA Board of Directors guides the Association forward on behalf of NAEA’s members and their learners. Regional Vice Presidents are nominated in odd years and President and Division Directors are nominated in even years.

April – June

One committee, with representatives from each NAEA Region and Division, reviews nominations and selects the candidates for the Board of Directors ballot, and open positions of the ED&I and Research Commissions for the current year cycle.

September – November

Commissioners on the ED&I Commission work in concert with the NAEA Board of Directors, state association affiliates, and members to respond to previously unaddressed and newly emerging issues, to advance NAEA ED&I priorities, and sustain the work begun by the NAEA ED&I Task Force.

Annual Call
September – November

The NAEA Research Commission works to meet the ongoing research needs of the visual arts education field. Commissioners coordinate and communicate about research that relates to the needs of practitioners and stakeholders who are concerned with understanding critical questions of importance to the field to provide the highest quality visual arts education possible in our schools and educational institutions.

August – October

A cohort of no more that 25 people are selected to participate in a 10-month program taking place both in-person and virtually. Utilizing experiential action learning modules and in-depth conversations with expert leaders, the program provides participants with learning experiences and skills to successfully lead in any environment.

Middle level (NJAHS) in odd years / Secondary (NAHS) in even years
December – February

The National Council of the National Art Honor Society studies NAHS/NJAHS issues and makes recommendations to NAEA regarding program policies and procedures. Sponsors of registered NAHS/NJAHS can apply to serve as a Member At Large during the open call period. There is one At Large member from among Secondary NAHS chapter sponsors and one from among Middle Level NJAHS chapter sponsors. Calls are held in alternating years.
