Art Education - Call for Submissions
Art Education is now accepting manuscripts for a special issue publishing in July 2025, “A Call for Counteraction: Reclaiming Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in Art Education.”
Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts on the following topics:
- Curriculum as an act of care for racial minority and LGBTQIA+ students and teachers
- Finding alternative ways to teach about race, gender, sexuality, and intersectionality in schools amid the backlash
- Challenging the idea of inclusion in art education curriculum that overemphasizes the experiences of a particular racial or ethnic group, which perpetuates racialization
- School policy interventions by parents and/or students to advocate for DEI
- Challenging recent rebranding of DEI offices and programs in higher education, such as “inclusive excellence,” “community, engagement and belonging,” and so on that dilutes the purpose of DEI initiatives
- Art practices that help sustain the lives and well-being of minoritized students and faculty amid the DEI backlash
- Art-based resistance to book bans that censor teaching about race and sexuality
- Art-based resistance to Don’t Say Gay policies in schools
Submissions are due December 31, 2024. Download complete details here.
Visual Culture & Gender - Call for Manuscripts
Visual Culture & Gender (VCG) was born digital more than a decade ago in 2005 as the first multimedia online journal in the field of art education, and the first online journal devoted to the intersections of visual culture and gender. VCG is an annual international, peer-reviewed, freely accessed, multimedia online journal whose purpose is to encourage and promote understanding of how visual culture constructs gender in context with representations of race, age, sexuality, (dis)ability, and social class.
The VCG Call for Manuscripts invites submissions of articles and visual essays that explore issues of equity and social justice through learning and teaching practices, which expose culturally learned meanings and power relations surrounding the creation, consumption, valuing, and dissemination of images.
Submission Guidelines
To be considered, manuscripts should be no more than 5000 words in length with an abstract of 150 words.
Images are encouraged with manuscripts and should be sent in digital format (jpg, gif, or png) with copyright permission provided.
Visual research is encouraged but images must be accompanied by text.
A multimedia submission should be accompanied by text of between 500 and 1500 words to include (1) a 150-word abstract, (2) a description of the images for those who use screen readers, (3) a critical introduction to contextualize and summarize the purpose of the work for its significance from a visual culture and gender perspective; and (4) the methodology, which conveys the theoretically informed process in creating and composing the visual, sound, or other media employed in the work.
Original manuscripts should be prepared according to the APA (7th edition) style.
Accompany the submission with a cover letter that includes the title of the article, word count, number of figures, and the name and email of each author. The cover letter should also include that the manuscript is original, not previously published, and not under consideration elsewhere.
Please place your name only in the accompanying cover letter and not in the manuscript to facilitate anonymous review.
Upload the manuscript electronically at http://vcg.emitto.net with .doc or .docx extensions
The deadline to submit manuscripts for volume 19 is Wednesday, November 15, 2023, 11:59 PM EDT.
Each year manuscripts are due Nov. 15 for the next volume, published each year on Sept. 15.
