2025–2026 NAEA Member-Led Working Group on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Art
Application Deadline: Tuesday, March 25, 2025
February 24, 2025
NAEA members Elizabeth (Lisa) Stuart and Tim Needles invite you to apply to join the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Art Working Group, which will be called upon to investigate the use, limitations, and opportunities of AI art and create findings and recommendations for consideration by the NAEA Board of Directors and staff.
The application for this opportunity will close on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.
The NAEA AI Art Working Group will support the mission and vision of NAEA by addressing the integration of AI into curricula, exploring ethical considerations, and fostering collaboration. As co-chairs, Lisa and Tim will facilitate the working group in navigating the complexities of this new frontier to ensure that art education remains relevant, equitable, and inspiring in an age of technological advancement.
The NAEA Member-Led Working Group on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Art will address several key issues:
- Ethical Implications: The work group will explore the ethical dimensions of AI in art, including issues of authorship, ownership, and the potential for bias in AI-generated content.
- Equity and Accessibility: It’s essential to ensure that generative AI tools are accessible to all students, regardless of socioeconomic status. The working group will address potential disparities in access and the importance of equitable AI education.
- Maintaining Artistic Integrity: There are concerns that generative AI may undermine traditional artistic skills. The group will focus on balancing technology with the foundational principles of art education to preserve the integrity of creative expression.
- Professional Development: Recognizing that many educators may feel unprepared to teach with generative AI tools, the work group will advocate for ongoing professional development opportunities that build educators’ confidence and competence.
The working group will include a diverse range of members from all Divisions and Regions who will bring forth different areas of experience, expertise, interest, and perspectives.
Committee Structure:
The working group will have up to 12 members (including two co-chairs) representing each NAEA Division and Region. Each committee member will serve until May 2026. Committee members with experience using generative AI and technology both in their work and with students and teachers are preferred.
Committee Responsibilities:
Members must commit to regularly attending meetings and completing any assigned work between meetings (meetings are expected to be held once a month, on a designated weeknight between 6:00 and 7:00 pm ET). This group serves in an advisory capacity to the NAEA Board to provide recommendations on the use of AI in visual arts, design, and media arts education. The Co-Chairs will submit notification of selection by April 7, 2025. Shape
