Frequently Asked Questions
At NAEA, we strive to provide you with the tools to access information for all of your professional needs. We pursue a policy of Education, Communication, and Empowerment.
Membership
A. NAEA members include visual arts, design, and media arts educators, scholars, researchers and professors, students, administrators, art museum educators, retired art educators, nonart educators, and artists.
A. In this increasingly global, visual age, it is important to be connected to your colleagues and the latest developments in visual arts education. As an NAEA member, YOU ARE CONNECTED! You become part of the only national professional organization established exclusively for visual arts educators. View the complete list of member benefits.
A. NAEA membership is on an individual basis. View membership types here. Multiple staff of one organization must hold individual memberships. You hold the membership, even if your organization pays for your membership and even if you decide to leave the organization. Institutional membership is intended for colleges, universities, libraries, and institutions directly or indirectly involved in art education. One individual serves as the designated the contact and will receive two subscriptions to both NAEA journals, Studies in Art Education and Art Education. Membership is transferable within the institution.
A. NAEA membership is on an anniversary cycle; therefore, your membership term is for 1 year, beginning on the day you join NAEA and ending on the last day of the previous month. For example, if you join on May 25, your membership will be valid through April 30 of the following year. Individual members have individual renewal dates. Therefore, the amount for your 1st year of membership is the full dues amount.
A. No. Simply complete a membership application for each member you are applying for and email the forms to members@arteducators.org. If you prefer to complete the memberships online, you must create a unique login for each member and join online separately.
A. Yes; simply indicate that the dues are for 2 or more years on the membership form. If you prefer to complete the membership online, you must pay for each year separately, as individual transactions. You may also contact NAEA Member Services by calling 1-800-299-8321 (M–F 8:15 am–4:30 pm ET) to pay for multiple years of membership.
A. Yes, your membership follows you even if your organization paid the dues. When you begin your new position, please update your member record online or contact NAEA Member Services at members@arteducators.org or by calling 1-800-299-8321 to update your contact information.
A. Active, Associate, Retired, Early Career, and Preservice memberships are not transferrable. Institutional membership is transferable within the institution. If your school has an Institutional membership and the designated contact has left, contact NAEA Member Services at members@arteducators.org or 1-800-299-8321 to request a transfer.
A. To be eligible for Preservice membership, you must be enrolled full-time as an undergraduate or graduate student. Verification must be provided to NAEA to activate membership. Send verification of full-time student status to members@arteducators.org; fax: 703-860-2960; or mail: 901 Prince Street, Alexandria, VA 22314.
A. There are three ways to find your Member ID: 1. Log in to your NAEA member profile; 2. Send an e-mail inquiry to members@arteducators.org; or 3. Call NAEA Member Services at 1-800-299-8321.
A: Allow 30–60 days from the time your membership is processed to the time you receive your first publication. Remember, your membership is processed in the month that NAEA receives payment.
A: Your Digital Member ID Card is available 24 hours after you join or renew. It is located on your NAEA Profile. If you prefer to receive your ID card by mail, please email your request to members@arteducators.org.
A: Yes. NAEA offers its members the Educators Insurance Program at a discounted rate through Forrest T. Jones & Company. You can contact Forrest T. Jones & Company at 800-821-7303 (toll-free), via email at info@ftj.com, or on the web at www.ftj.com/NAEA.
A: Membership is automatically extended to the next anniversary date. Refunds are granted only upon request. If you wish to request a refund, please contact NAEA Member Services by emailing members@arteducators.org.
A: National dues are the same in all states and provinces. Most state associations, however, maintain a dues collection arrangement with NAEA. In these states, NAEA collects both state and national dues. Members pay a combined state and national fee. Since state associations determine their own dues portion, amounts will vary from state to state. Once a month, NAEA returns to the states the portion of the dollars collected for state dues.
A: Select the Division where you spend the most teaching time or the Division whose support you believe would be most beneficial to you. Declaring Division affiliation is important so that you can participate in an information network as well as receive valuable resources designated for particular teaching levels.
A: Most members opt for the state in which they teach. If your state preference differs from your mailing address, be sure to alert NAEA Member Services by emailing members@arteducators.org or calling 1-800-299-8321 so that your record reflects the state in which you seek membership.
A: One teacher from your school will be considered the designated contact. The designated contact will receive all the benefits of membership, except the right to vote or hold national office. The designated contact will receive the member registration rate for the Convention. Additionally, the designated contact will receive two subscriptions to Studies in Art Education and Art Education. Institutional membership is transferrable within the institution.
A: If your school sent a purchase order (PO) requesting membership, NAEA will send an invoice; however, membership will only be initiated upon full payment. Please make certain that the member’s name, address, and finance office contact name and email address are clearly designated on the PO. Submit your PO by emailing it to members@arteducators.org or fax it to 703-860-2960.
A: National and state conventions offer lectures and demonstrations by renowned artists. There are local artists’ workshops and seminars, as well as opportunities to examine art galleries and museums of the host city.
A: Each month, updated membership rosters are sent to all membership-contracted state association leaders. These reports include a roster of all current state members, all new and renewing members for the month, and all members whose memberships expired that month, among other detailed reports. We also collect state dues, eliminating the need for them to handle this themselves, and reimburse the states’ portion back to them at the end of each month. We look forward to offering additional services in the future.
A: Yes; view the NAEA Membership Refund Policy or visit the Membership page and look under Helpful Downloads.
A: Yes, NAEA members are eligible for special discounts. Receive substantial savings on the National Convention, subscriptions to Studies in Art Education and Arts Education Policy Review, group insurance programs, and NAEA publications and advocacy items.
A: Refer to the NAHS/NJAHS Chapter Handbook for all forms and information. NAEA membership is required of all sponsors.
A: Absolutely! NAEA offers Retired membership for individuals who are retired and no longer professionally employed in the field of art education. Retired membership provides all the privileges of Active Professional membership. There are currently over 1,000 Retired members in our community!
Structure
A: You have at least 10 contacts for communicating your needs: your regional Vice President; your National Division Director; your three NAEA Presidents; your regional Division Director; your state/province representative to Delegates Assembly; any Interest Group to which you belong; the National Office. See Board of Directors.
A: A call for nominations is printed in NAEA News, which explains the process. The nominating committee assembles a slate of individuals most qualified for each office. In late fall, instructions for voting online are sent to all members eligible to vote. President-Elect and National Division Directors are elected in odd-numbered years; Vice Presidents in even-numbered years. Directors and Vice Presidents serve 2 years while Presidents serve a total of 6 years. See Governance Structure.
A: All members may vote except Institutional members and Associate members.
A: In the interests of equity for all nominees, NAEA prohibits organized campaigning for nominees. Some state associations may be better able to afford campaigning costs than others, thus putting nominees from less affluent areas at a disadvantage. Biographies and vitae of all nominees are circulated to voting members through the election ballot and is posted on NAEA’s website so that an informed electorate is possible.
A: Each issue of NAEA News lists this information for elected officers as well as Interest Groups chairs and regional representatives in the bi-monthly columns by officers. All national elected officers are also posted on the NAEA website. See Board of Directors.
A: NAEA encourages the formation of Student Chapters to encourage a high standard of quality art education on campus and in the community and to provide students with a smooth transition from art education preparation to professional practice. NAEA student membership is strongly encouraged and sponsor membership is required.
NAEA National Convention
A: Sites are rotated around the country to make access easier for members. Cities are chosen based on local hotel accommodations such as the number of sleeping rooms, the available meeting and exhibition space, and of course, the cost to members. Air traffic flow into the city plus local resources like museums and architectural interests also influence the choice.
A: A historical list of locations and themes for NAEA National Conventions and a list of Program Coordinators can be found on our Convention web page under Helpful Downloads.
A: Only the designated Institutional member can submit a proposal.
A: First, payment would violate the terms of our nonprofit status as expressed in the NAEA Constitution. Second, program selection is not a commercial enterprise. Proposals are chosen because they contribute to NAEA’s mission of advancing art education through professional development. Over 2,000 proposals are submitted annually and less than half qualify. To be selected is an honor. Most importantly, however, payment would undermine the spirit of service and volunteerism which distinguishes our Association.
A: NAEA does not offer CEUs, as NAEA is not an accrediting agency. We will make available to you a Professional Development Certificate, which certifies your attendance and participation at the NAEA National Convention. Direct questions to convention@arteducators.org.
A: You may not have one. To our knowledge, only New Jersey requires a Provider Number. Contact your local district or accrediting agency to determine if you need to include a provider number and what that number is.
Publications
A: Articles for Art Education, Studies in Art Education, Translations, and the NAEA Advisory should be sent to the individual editors. See Writing for NAEA.
A: If you would like to examine one of NAEA’s titles for possible adoption as a new textbook, the cost of your desk copy is refunded if you (or your bookstore) place an order for 10 or more copies within 45 days of your desk copy purchase. E-mail deskcopy@arteducators.org. with the book title and Bookstore/Purchaser’s name and dates of purchase. NAEA will confirm the initial order and the Bookstore order, and mail a reimbursement for the initial invoice. If you prefer, you may fax the Desk Copy reimbursement request to 703-860-2960, Attention: Desk Copy with the titles you would like to examine. Include billing and shipping addresses. NAEA will mail your requested title(s) along with an invoice.
A: All requests to reprint/republish copyrighted materials published by NAEA are processed through the Copyright Clearance Center. You may direct inquiries to info@copyright.com or contact the Copyright Clearance Center’s customer service department at 978-646-2600. View NAEA’s Policies and Procedures.
A: Subscriptions are handled by Taylor & Francis. View subscription information and rates.
A: All university bookstores, resellers, and textbook brokers may purchase NAEA publications at the non-member rate. Bookstores, resellers, and brokers may be eligible for the member rate in two instances: (1) order is for a quantity of 10 or more of the same publication; and/or (2) order includes a valid member ID number.
A: Yes. To purchase individual or multiple copies of a particular issue, please call Member Services at 800-299-8321 or 703-860-8000, Monday – Friday, 8:15am – 4:30 pm ET, as inventory levels vary.
A: Since publication labels are printed 30-60 days ahead of the actual publication mailing, please allow sufficient time for the change to catch up with you. Your address change may have been received too late to process for that issue.

Website
A: Yes, the NAEA website is secure through an SSL Certificate. Each page on the site is secure both internally and externally. In terms of network security, hardware has been completely upgraded as has the server infrastructure and intrusion detection software. There are two general indications of a secured web page: 1) Check the web page URL. Normally, when browsing the web, the URLs (web page addresses) begin with the letters “http”. However, over a secure connection the address displayed should begin with “https” – note the “s” at the end. 2) Check for the “Lock” icon. There is a de facto standard among web browsers to display a “lock” icon somewhere in the window of the browser (NOT in the web page display area). If you have questions, please contact webmaster@arteducators.org.
A: Utilize the Search box button located top right on each page within the website.
A: For general end-user support for Digication’s e-Portfolios, email support@digication.com. This will take you to an automated ticketing system, which is handled by the support team daily. You may also call 1-888-342-3444 and press #3 for support. To learn how to create your e-Portfolio or to troubleshoot an issue, refer to the following documents: Digication Quick Start Guide | Digication e-Portfolio Help Guide

Since the Foundation’s inception in 1985, the projects of over 236 members have been made possible through NAEF grant programs. NAEF funding supports a wide variety of professional activities, including promotion of art education as an integral part of the curriculum; establishment and/or improvement of art instruction in public and private K-16 schools; promotion of the teaching of art through activities related to the instructional process, curriculum, student learning, student assessment, classroom behavior, management, or discipline; purchase of art equipment and/or instructional resources; and research in art education. Additionally, the NAEF provides professional development scholarships. The deadline for most programs is October 1 of each year. NAEF grants are for research or for professional development for certified arts educators who are members of NAEA. Learn more on the NAEF web page. Questions about the National Art Education Foundation? Contact naef@naea.arteducators.org.
A: Please submit your inquiry or proposal to info@arteducators.org and it will be routed to the appropriate staff person.
A: Please contact your state association. Locate your state affiliate. The NAEA headquarters office does not handle registration for state conferences.
A: Get the facts! Learn why a visual arts education is important. Visit the advocacy section for resources. Also, acquaint yourself with the recent Every Child Succeeds Act (ESSA). Find out who your legislators are and send a letter to your policymakers today. Encourage friends and colleagues to take a minute to send a letter, too. NAEA is doing all it can at the national level and we support our state affiliates at the local level, but it takes every one of us–people–to really make a difference. That is why it more critical than ever that we continue to work together to promote and preserve the visual arts in our schools.
