In the Shadow of Change: Ideologies and Methodologies in Art Education

A wide range of ideologies and theories inform research in art education. For example, the editorial policy for Studies in Art Education acknowledges and encourages both traditional forms of research as well as emerging possibilities that challenge, reconsider, and question how new knowledge is constructed. Shifting social, cultural, political, and technological contexts contribute to a growing collection of ideologies on which research in art education emerges.
Informed by the increasing interdisciplinarity of the field, artists, art educators, and cultural producers find themselves progressively attentive to reconsiderations of existing assumptions, traditions, and visions for the field. Recent conversations and actions by the NAEA Research Commission, the Art Education Research Institute (AERI), and other groups within and beyond art education, arts research, and arts-based research communities, reflect a moment ripe for close and critical reconsideration, reimagination, and reconstruction of ideas and approaches central to art education research. Theories and practices of knowledge construction are central to what art education research is and what art education research does. The field is expansive, comprised of an array of ideologies and methodologies.
Authors may want to consider some of the following questions as they draft submissions:
- What ideological and methodological responsibilities does art education face in the shadow of political change, social unrest, protest, state violence, xenophobia, and intolerance?
- How do research ideologies and methodologies in art education respond to social, cultural, political, and historical shifts?
- What ideologies and methodologies are central to art education in an age of post-truth, fake news, alternative facts, and post racial society? In other words, what does the field of art education know and how does it know it? How does the field of art education show what it knows?
- What theoretical and methodological conversations and debates are worth consideration?
- What ways of thinking inform the field? What ideological and methodological shifts in art education are worth notice? What ideologies and methodologies are valued, emphasized, questioned and/or needed in the 21st century?
- How do epistemological and ontological perspectives inform research methodologies in art education? How do they inform the actions researchers take, the inquiries they elevate, the sites they study, and the modes they employ?
- How are art education research methodologies taught, learned, practiced, or reimagined?
- What can art education learn from ideologies and methodologies in other fields? What can other fields learn from ideologies and methodologies in art education?
- What ideologies and methodologies are central to research in art museums, K-12 settings, community art spaces, and other educational sites beyond schools?
The Senior Editor of Studies in Art Education invites manuscripts that address this topic: In the Shadow of Change: Ideologies and Methodologies in Art Education. This special issue is concerned with the ideologies that motivate and inform research in art education and the methodologies art education scholars use in their research to construct new knowledge. This issue might serve as a snapshot of particular ideas and beliefs that motivate art education research and specific modes scholars use to mobilize their inquiry. All submissions for this special issue should follow the established submission guidelines for the journal.
