National Art Education Association to Receive $40k Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts

May 2021

Alexandria, VA—The National Art Education Association has been approved for a $40,000.00 Grants for Arts Projects award to support Phase Four of their Cultural Competency in Teaching and Leadership Certificate Program. This project, also supported by the National Art Education Foundation, is aligned to NAEA’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (ED&I) goals and will support professional development by working with eight sites for field testing: four NAEA state affiliates (one per region); Howard University Art Department; two Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) sites in San Antonio, TX; and one school/community site in Fairfax, VA.

Each testing site will have fall, winter, and spring curriculum units centered around three, two-hour convenings. An additional ED&I online resource will be developed through the grant as well. Phases One, Two, and Three of the project focused on developing the curriculum, establishing an Advisory Council, working with a Pilot Cohort to explore the curriculum, and a “Train the Trainers” program to prepare and present four regional workshops in June and July of 2021.

The National Art Education Association’s project is among the more than 1,100 projects across America totaling nearly $27 million that were selected during this second round of Grants for Arts Projects fiscal year 2021 funding.

“As the country and the arts sector begin to imagine returning to a post-pandemic world, the National Endowment for the Arts is proud to announce funding that will help arts organizations such as the National Art Education Association reengage fully with partners and audiences,” said NEA Acting Chairman Ann Eilers. “Although the arts have sustained many during the pandemic, the chance to gather with one another and share arts experiences is its own necessity and pleasure.”
