Research Grants in the Arts guidelines now available

The National Endowment for the Arts’ Research Grants in the Arts program (formerly named Research: Art Works) supports projects that seek to investigate the value and impact of the arts for individuals and communities. Proposed projects may use quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods approaches. Application guidelines for the present round of funding are now available on the Arts Endowment website. The upcoming deadline is October 3, 2019.

Research Grants in the Arts offers support for projects in two areas:

  • Value and Impact. These research projects aim to examine the value and/or impact of the arts in any topic area(s) by using data and methods appropriate to the proposed research questions. Matching grants range from $10,000-$30,000.
  • Experimental and Quasi-Experimental Designs. These research projects aim to test the causal or inferred-causal impact of the arts on individual or cohort outcomes by using experimental or quasi-experimental design methods appropriate to the proposed research questions. Matching grants range from $30,000-$100,000.

Since 2012, the Arts Endowment has awarded more than $2.5 million to support projects through the Research Grants in the Arts program. Previous awards can be viewed using online Recent Grant Search. Study reports for projects completed to date can be accessed from the Office of Research & Analysis’ Research Grants in the Arts findings page.
