NAEA Delegation to Kosovo

July 6-12, 2019

Join art educators on an insightful and important international exchange as a member of the NAEA Delegation to Kosovo. In conjunction with World Learning, a US-based nonprofit organization with an 85-year legacy, this delegation has been developed to foster one-on-one dialogue with our overseas counterparts.

About Kosovo

The Balkan Region, specifically Kosovo, was the site of civil unrest, war and genocide during the late 1990s. In 1999, the United Nations took over Kosovo to stabilize the region. Following the end of the violence, governments and non-governmental organizations, including World Learning, developed and implemented programs to support the restructuring of Kosovo.

Pristina, the capital of Kosovo, is a distinctly Eastern European city, with all the influences of the rich and diverse cultures that have impacted this area. When you step out of Pristina, you are transported back in time amidst the beauty of small agrarian communities.

About the Delegation

The NAEA Delegation will convene in Pristina, Kosovo on July 6 and conclude on July 12, 2019. Download a preliminary schedule and overview here.

After exploring Pristina, our delegation will visit a rural community to observe the education system and art education programs serving a major portion of the population.

Kosovo has had self-governance for only 10 years, and during this time, the international community has worked with the people of Kosovo to launch some of the most innovative programs to quickly rebuild the education system infrastructure in one of the poorest countries in Europe. Our delegation will have the opportunity to learn from the successes, challenges, and best practices of the programs implemented.

The interactions, site visits, and experiences of this journey have been designed to enhance our appreciation for this unique country and the diverse populations that define this less-visited part of the world.

We will meet with art educators and observe our counterparts first-hand—discussing their methods for and experiences with the implementation of programs designed by international experts. The topics of discussion and site/facility visits designed for this program are:

  • Learning about the Education System in Kosovo

  • Exploring how Art Education fits into the Education system priorities

  • Learning how Visual arts are taught at all levels of education

  • Understanding the training requirements for Art Educators

  • Recognizing the representation of conflict and violence through art

  • Exploring Art as a development tool
