The Higher Education Division of the National Art Education Association is proud to announce two additional opportunities to present your scholarly work and ideas at the NAEA National Convention in Louisville, KY, March 20-22, 2025.

We are organizing two thematic Higher Education Division Forums to advance critical discussions on relevant topics to higher educators. If selected in a blind peer-reviewed process, presenters will participate in one of the two Higher Education Division Forums held at the convention:

  • Forum #1: Mentorship through Research: Exciting Collaborative Faculty and Student Projects and Analyses

  • Forum #2: arTED Micro Presentations: Circumnavigating Art Education Research

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

FORUM #1

Mentorship through Research: Exciting Collaborative Faculty and Student Projects and Analyses

The university professor/student relationship is unique and a few short years on the timeline of the undergraduate or graduate students’ scholarly journey. While coursework and teacher preparation program requirements are central to art education college degrees, this is also a time period in which the university student is introduced to the process of conducting research. Through coursework and program efforts, faculty and students engage in academic investigation and discovery that focuses on the betterment of art education and/or understanding it more thoroughly. One of the main ways that researchers share their work is by attending academic conferences, symposia, or other events. By working together on research and presenting jointly on research outcomes, university students gain valuable experience, better understanding of academia develops, and they learn how to conduct research under the tutelage of a skilled mentor. All of these skills are essential to the practicing PK-12 art educator and to those considering advanced degrees. By sharing their collaborative research, these faculty/student teams will both present timely and contemporary research in the field of art education and preservice students will also gain important knowledge in how to conduct and present research.

Details:
We invite each mentor-student team (each team consists of two people) to present brief 10-minute presentations to address varying topics, practices, program developments, and research extending from the faculty/student research experience. Panelist teams will be secured who propose a broad and diverse range of themes, representing various types of university programs, geographic locations, and professional affiliation or positions. At the conclusion of the session, attendees will be encouraged to ask questions and share developments in their university programs. Attendees will be provided with solutions and ideas for consideration in their programs and in today’s social context, as well as gain skills for conducting collaborative faculty/student research.

FORUM #2

arTED Micro Presentations: Circumnavigating Art Education Research

The field of art education is rich with creative and cognitive research, yet one must typically attend a conference, symposia, or convention or purchase/read books or journals to learn of this research. Busy art educators and university faculty members often do not have time to explore what is going on in our field due to their own pressing schedules and research. This forum is an open call for researchers to present short five-minute micro-presentations on their common or uncommon studies in a variety of categories and themes associated with our field. Through this session, many topics will be explored, such as how art education researchers are exploring challenges associated with learner development or teacher prep programs, curricular needs, addressing difficult topics, examining social emotional learning, incorporating and examining artificial intelligence, broaching systemic racism in innovative ways, and driving our field forward into the 21st century with a wide range of study. The anticipated outcome is to broaden our scope of the layers of research being conducted in art education.

Details:
We invite individual participants to give 5-minute presentations with a broad and diverse range of themes, representing common or uncommon approaches to evidence-based research. After panel presentations, attendees will have the opportunity to network with panelists and explore the potential for doing collaborative work in the future. Attendees will leave with a fresh approach and better understanding about developments in the field of art education, thereby inspiring their own research efforts.

How to Submit

To apply to be a panelist in one of these forums you must be a current NAEA member (now and through the end of March 2025). We invite researchers and practitioners to use the following procedure:

1.) Submit an abstract (no more than 300 words and with a title) offering a clear and coherently written explication of perspectives, methods, and/or findings relevant to the following questions:

  • Include your name, affiliation, and NAEA membership number above your presentation title (This information will be removed prior to blind peer-review process).
  • To which forum (Mentor-student or arTED) are you applying?
  • How does your research connect to the forum’s topic?
  • Maximum number of presenters. Due to the fast-paced nature of the forum presentation and to ensure the quality presentation, we are limiting each Forum 1 Mentor-Student team to 2 people and reserve Forum 2 for individual presenters.

2.) To prepare the strongest submission, please refer to the rubric below which the review committee will utilize to score each submission.

3.) Email the completed abstract to the appropriate Forum Administrator (listed below) no later than Oct 14, 2024, 11:59pm EST.

  • Abstract for FORUM #1: Mentorship through Research: Exciting Collaborative Faculty and Student Projects and Analyses should be sent to Dustin Garnet, dgarnet2@calstatela.edu

  • Abstract for FORUM #2: arTED Micro Presentations: Circumnavigating Art Education Research should be sent to Yichien Cooper, ycooper@wsu.edu

4.) In the email subject head, clearly specify which forum you are applying, “HE Forum # for NAEA_Title_Your Last Name.“

Selection Process

Members of the NAEA Higher Education Division leadership team will perform a blind peer-review of the submissions. We hope to notify selected participants of their acceptance for these in-person panels (no remote presentations) by Dr. Cooper and Dr. Garnet by Monday, November 18, 2024.
