Position Statement on Importance of Visual Arts Supervisors/Administrators in PreK-12 Education

NAEA believes that school districts should support arts education programs by having and maintaining arts education supervisor position(s). Visual Arts Supervisors/Administrators ensure exemplary visual arts programs that meet the needs of all students. The role of the supervisor is to implement Pre-K-12 programs through rigorous curriculum aligned to state and/or national arts standards; engaging instruction; authentic assessment; quality equipment, facilities and resources; community advocacy; and professional development for highly qualified certified/licensed educators. This includes collaboration with school leadership teams regarding teacher evaluation and the development of teacher leaders in the arts.
NAEA recognizes that while the visual arts shares characteristics with other arts disciplines, it stands as its own unique discipline within the arts. NAEA believes it is imperative that support for visual arts educators and district programs be provided by supervisors/administrators with experience in the field of visual arts education.
