At NAEA, there are a number of ways to become involved in our community. Committees and Issues Groups allow you to focus on specific issues in art education that interest you and connect you with a network of colleagues who feel the same way!

Committees  
Committees are designated by the NAEA president. Current committees are the Professional Materials Committee (PMC) and Executive/Finance Committee. 
 
Advocacy Advisory Committee
In support of NAEA Goal 3, outlined in the 2007–2010 Strategic Plan, President Rushlow appointed an Advocacy Advisory Committee to work with the Board and headquarters staff in an advisory role to make recommendations regarding how “NAEA will effectively communicate the importance of student learning and lifelong learning in the visual arts to art educators, policymakers, parents, and the community” (2007–2010 Strategic Plan).

Community Advisory Committee 
As reflected in the list of NAEA Core Values and presented in the 2007-2010 Strategic Plan,  “Valuing our diversity and committing ourselves to equity,” the Community Advisory Committee will study and recommend strategies that will encompass community building across generations, divisions and regions to include:
 
 • Nurturing an ever dynamic and diverse membership community 
 • Increasing membership 
 •  Creating multiple opportunities for engagement through volunteer service and leadership 
 
Members of the committee are:

 
Website Advisory Committee  
The purpose of this initiative is to establish the policy and structure for the NAEA Website Advisory Committee so that it may function in an orderly and effective manner in serving the organization.  The recommended policies include: 
1.  The Web Advisory Committee is composed of five (5) NAEA members in good standing.  All four regions must be represented on the Committee. 
2.  The members will each serve a two-year term, with a limit of two consecutive terms. 
3.  The members will be selected/nominated by the NAEA Regional Vice Presidents. 
4.  The NAEA President calls for nominations, decides on what will be the most appropriate configuration of the committee, including regional representation, and then submits the roster of NAEA members to the NAEA Board for approval. 
5.  The chair will appoint a secretary.  The secretary will help the Committee Chair maintain documentation, including electronic and digital information, of the work the Committee does. 
6.  The members will serve in staggered terms with three terms ending in one year and two others ending the following year of departure.  This allows for the benefit of having a “mentor” system for incoming members and keeps a more focused long-term strategy in place. 
7.  The members will conduct virtual meetings using online services, e-mail and other forms of communication as needed prior to NAEA Board meetings to write motions and make recommendations.  The members will hold a meeting at the NAEA Convention with the NAEA President to address Committee work.
8.  The Committee will submit recommendations, initiatives, and reports to the NAEA President who will review and revise the information as needed and present it to the NAEA Board of Directors.

Purposes, Principles and Standards for School Art Programs Revision Committee
This 33-page publication, last revised in 1999 with committee leadership provided by Bonnie Rushlow, is directed toward the promotion and recognition of educationally sound visual art programs in elementary, middle/junior, and high schools. It is designed as a self-assessment evaluation of seven art education program components: Organization, Curriculum, Personnel, Scheduling, Facilities, Materials/Equipment, and Budgets. Nomination form and self-assessment checklists for the Standards Award are included in the document for use by NAEA members.

A review of this publication by the ad-hoc Purposes, Principles, and Standards for School Art Programs Revision Committee is being undertaken during this academic year in anticipation of its design, production and release by NAEA publications during winter 2011. This initiative is a logical next step following the recent revision, update, and release of Standards for Art Teacher Preparation that identifies characteristics of high-quality programs for preparing arts educators along with its companion document, Professional Standards for Visual Arts Educators, that describes knowledge, skills, and attitudes art educators should possess to provide high-quality art instruction for all students.

The charge of this committee is to review the current publication (1) to ensure its' content is relevant in today’s environment and complements both recently revised standards documents, and (2) to bring forward a revised publication and other recommendations to the Board for counsel, action, and publication during the 2011 academic year.

NAEA Awards Program Review Committee
Specific information about the current awards programs can be found on the NAEA website at: http://www.arteducators.org/awards.

Occasional reviews of ongoing NAEA programs take place to ensure their currency. A review begun in late 2005 was delayed when it became necessary to identify a new NAEA Executive Director (Committee Report attached). Awards upgrades occurred this past year to raise the quality of recognition for those who receive NAEA national awards.

The charge of this committee is to thoroughly complete the 2005 review and to make recommendations to improve the Awards program through changes that: 1) clarify requirements and strengthen procedures 2) delete or modify categories that no longer remain viable for awards and (3) increase opportunities for recognition. The work of this committee will continue through this academic year. It is anticipated that suggestions brought forward by the committee will be recommended to the Board for counsel, action, and application during the 2011 awards cycle.
