Arts Education Issues Briefs Posted for 2011 Arts Advocacy Day
Americans for the Arts has posted the issues briefs for 2011 Arts Advocacy Day, April 4 and 5, 2011 at www.AmericansForTheArts.org/aad/handbook. The two briefing papers related to arts education are the Arts in Education Issues Brief (relative to the appropriations for the Arts in Education program at the U.S. Department of Education) and the ESEA Reauthorization Issues Brief. The issues briefs were developed by the national arts and arts education organizations which serve on the Arts Education Legislative Working Group, including NAEA. NAEA is also a national co-sponsor of Arts Advocacy Day. F. Robert Sabol, PhD, NAEA President, Dennis Inhulsen, NAEA President-elect, Deborah B. Reeve, EdD, NAEA Executive Director, and Kathi R. Levin, who represents NAEA on the working group, attended Arts Advocacy Day events. The 24th annual Arts Advocacy Day is the only national event that brings together a broad cross section of America’s cultural and civic organizations, along with hundreds of grassroots advocates from across the country, to underscore the importance of developing strong public policies and appropriating increased public funding for the arts. For more information about Arts Advocacy Day, see Americans for the Arts website at www.AmericansForTheArts.org.

Without an official hearing, arts advocates still make the case
The annual Arts Advocacy Day almost fizzled. The committee that controls the purse for the arts and humanities endowments had to cancel a morning hearing because of the pressing budget questions. (The Washington Post, Jacqueline Trescott, 4/5/11)

District of Columbia: Arts Advocates Head to the Hill
"In 1992, Kevin Spacey and Alec Baldwin appeared together in the film version of David Mamet's play Glengarry Glen Ross, about a group of downmarket real estate salesmen in Chicago. On [April 5], the actors were again pounding the pavement, this time teaming up to generate support for the arts on Capitol Hill. The event was the 24th Annual Arts Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C., organized by Americans for the Arts...Funding for the nation's three main cultural grantmaking agencies—the NEA, National Endowment for the Humanities and the Institute of Museum and Library Services—would fall about 13.3 percent under the proposed federal budget." (Los Angeles Times Culture Monster blog, 4/5/11)
Yesterday was Arts Advocacy Day, Americans for the Arts’ annual convergence of hundreds of advocates on Capitol Hill making the case for arts and arts education.
This year, Kevin Spacey and Alec Baldwin were on hand to testify before the House Appropriations Subcommittee about funding for the National Endowment for the Arts – which is currently threatened by a cuts in the range of $20-40 million. When the hearing was canceled due to emergency budget negotiations, Spacey instead delivered his remarks to a huge crowd. Committee hearing or not, Arts Advocacy Day drew quite a bit of attention to a very worthy cause. (WTOP, 4/6)
