Q: Does NAEA offer insurance to its members?
A: Yes. NAEA offers its members the Educators Insurance Program at a discounted rate through Forrest T. Jones & Company. You can contact Forrest T. Jones & Company at 800-821-7303 (toll-free), via e-mail at info@ftj.com, or on the web at www.ftj.com/NAEA.
Q: How can I submit an article for one of NAEA's publications?
A: News items may be sent to the NAEA News Publications Manager at the NAEA National Office. Articles for Art Education, Studies in Art Education, Translations, and the NAEA Advisory should be sent to the individual editors. See Writing for NAEA.
Q: Where can I obtain a catalog of NAEA publications?
A: Watch for the September issue of Art Education with its complete listing of NAEA publications. See Publications List.
Q: How do I start a National Art Honor Society chapter in my school?
A: Refer to the NAHS/NJAHS Application Handbook for all forms and information. NAEA membership is required of all sponsors. See NAHS.
Q: Can anyone nominate an individual for an award?
A: Any current NAEA member may nominate or be nominated for a national award. The May issue of Art Education contains an Awards booklet with all the information you need. See Awards.
Q: How are convention sites selected?
A: Sites are rotated around the country to make access easier for members. Cities are chosen based on local hotel accommodations such as the number of sleeping rooms, the available meeting and exhibition space and of course, the cost to members. Air traffic flow into the city plus local resources like museums and architectural interests also influence the choice.
Q: I understand that NAEA doesn't offer honoraria to members who make convention presentations. Why is that?
A: First, payment would violate the terms of our non-profit status as expressed in the NAEA Constitution. Also, program selection is not a commercial enterprise. Proposals are chosen because they contribute to NAEA's mission of advancing art education through professional development. Over 1,200 proposals are submitted annually and only a little over half qualify. To be selected is an honor. Most importantly, however, payment would undermine the spirit of service and volunteerism, which distinguishes our Association.
Q: I am an artist as well as a teacher. How will NAEA membership contribute to my artistic growth?
A: National and state conventions offer lectures and demonstrations by renowned artists like Christo, Sam Gilliam, Miriam Schapiro, Judy Chicago, and Jesus Moroles. There are local artists' workshops and seminars as well as opportunities to examine art galleries and museums of the host city.
Q: Does NAEA provide any benefits or services to my state association?
A: Each month updated membership rosters are sent to all affiliated states. These reports include a roster of all current state members, all new and renewing members for the month, and all members who expired that month. We also collect state dues eliminating the need for them to handle this themselves and rebate the state portion back to them at the end of each month. We look forward to offering additional services in the future.

Q: As an NAEA member, where can I voice a problem, suggest a policy change, or a new program?
A: You have at least 10 contacts for communicating your needs: your regional Vice President; your National Division Director; your three NAEA Presidents; your regional Division Director; your state/province representative to Delegates Assembly; any Issues Group to which you belong; the National Office. See Board of Directors.
Q: How are members of the Board of Directors elected?
A: A call for nominations is printed in NAEA News, which explains the process. The nominating committee assembles a slate of individuals most qualified for each office. By January, an election ballot is mailed to all members eligible to vote. President-elect and National Division Directors are elected in odd-numbered years; Vice Presidents in even-numbered years. Directors and Vice Presidents serve two years while Presidents serve a total of six years. See Governance Structure.
Q: Who is eligible to vote?
A: All members may vote except Institutional members and Associate members.
Q: Who is eligible to hold national office?
A: Any member who meets the criteria listed for each position in the NAEA Policy Handbook. This information is available upon request.
Q: A member of my state association is running for national office and supporters want to campaign for the candidate. Are there any restrictions?
A: In the interests of equity for all nominees, NAEA prohibits organized campaigning for nominees. Some state associations may be better able to afford campaigning costs than others, thus putting nominees from less affluent areas at a disadvantage. Biographies and vitae of all nominees are circulated to voting members through the election ballot so that an informed electorate is possible.
Q: Where do I find the names and addresses of my elected officers?
A: Each issue of NAEA News lists this information for elected officers as well as Special Issues chairs and regional representatives in the bi-monthly columns by officers.
Q: What is the relationship between college/university Student Chapters and NAEA?
A: NAEA encourages the formation of Student Chapters to encourage a high standard of quality art education on campus and in the community and to provide students with a smooth transition from art education preparation to professional practice. NAEA student membership is strongly encouraged and sponsor membership is required.
Q: Do you have an NAEA Fact Sheet?
A: Yes. You may access the Fact Sheet here or you can find it in the "About Us" section of the website, http://www.arteducators.org/about.
............................................................................................................................
Q: If I join NAEA, when may I expect to receive my first magazine?
A: Allow 30-60 days from the time your membership is processed to the time you receive your first publication. Remember, your membership is processed in the month that the National Office receives payment. Your I.D. card should arrive within two weeks.
Q: I sent an address change to NAEA but did not receive two publications at my new address. What happened?
A: Since publication labels are printed 30-60 days ahead of the actual publication mailing, please allow sufficient time for the change to catch up with you. Your address change may have been received too late to process for those publications.
Q: I didn't realize that my school had already sent my membership payment when I recently paid my dues. Now I have made a duplicate payment. What will happen?
A: Membership is automatically extended to the next anniversary date. Refunds are granted only upon request.
Q: Why do membership fees vary among state/province associations?
A: National dues are the same in all state/province associations. Most state associations, however, maintain a dues collection arrangement with NAEA. In these states, NAEA collects both state and national dues. Members pay a combined state/national fee. Since state associations determine their own dues portion, amounts will vary from state to state. Once a month, NAEA returns to the states the portion of the dollars collected for state dues.
Q: I teach K-12. In which division do I belong?
A: Select the division where you spend the most teaching time or the division whose support you believe would be most beneficial to you. Declaring division affiliation is important so that you can participate in an information network as well as receive valuable resources designated for particular teaching levels.
Q: I live in one state and teach in another. May I belong to both state associations?
A: Most members opt for the state in which they teach. If your state preference differs from your mailing address, be sure to alert the National Office so that your record reflects the state in which you seek membership.
Q: My school is considering an Institutional Membership. Can we send three teachers to the convention under the umbrella of that membership?
A: Institutional membership provides one free convention registration for the designated representative of the institution. Any other individual would need to purchase membership and registration.
Q: My school is considering an Institutional Membership. Can more than one teacher submit a proposal for the national convention?
A: Only the designated Institutional member can submit a proposal.
Q: My school will pay for my membership but the business office requires billing before payment can be made. Does NAEA send invoices?
A: If your school sent a purchase order requesting membership, the National Office will send an invoice. Please make certain that the member name and address are clearly designated. Membership is initiated upon full payment.
